Top Team In the midlands

Stonydelph Boys has been established since 2nd June 1998 By Trevor & Bernice Temple. The club has gone from strength to strength over the years, with great success in both the league and tournament success for all age groups.

Why it all started

First of all the reason why:- Our son James played for Wilnecote Wanderers, he was their number one goalkeeper, sharing his position with another lad. During the season player pressure (the second goalie went to the same school as most of the team) got the better of the team manager and slowly James got pushed out onto the sub bench. He finished the season and then left to start training with Polesworth Swifts, he was promised a position in the squad as their goalie but only until their original gk came back after breaking his leg. Not wanting to be just a 'stand in' James felt disappointed and so, as parents do, (or do they?) we just discussed starting our own team thinking it couldn't be that hard to do. We applied to the Birmingham County FA and the Tamworth Junior League and low and behold, we got accepted.

We got together some of our James' friends, school mates and a couple of other players who were a little despondent with Wilnecote and took our first training session.

Then came the birth of S.B.F.C

Now for the when:-

So-oooh, Stonydelph Boys was formed by myself (Bernice) and Trevor with the official date of 2nd June 1998. We did some fund-raising and found a sponsor to purchase a kit, 'The Wright Wash' at Amington. Team colours were Royal Blue & black. The club badge is part of the Temple's family crest. 'Flecti-non-Frangi' is Latin and means 'Bend not break'. We did adopt a second club motto though which is 'They that care will win'.

OUR 1ST SEASON

We just knew that it would be a tough season trying to play first division football with a bunch of lads who had never played competition football before but, we kept the lads moral high and we had a really good time. It was during this first season that people would stop us in the street or come across to the field while we were training or during a match and ask if we had got teams running for the little ones (U8's) so, after our first season had finished we advertised that we were forming another age group, an U8's.

First training session only 2 lads turned up, thinking that it probably wasn't a very good idea to start a second age group we decided to give it just one more week, we turned up and low and behold between 20 to 30 kids just appeared through the hedges from no where. Not only did we have enough players to form an U8's squad, we got players for U7's as well.

Craig Notman and a bloke called Anthony Hyde volunteered to become team managers, followed by Matthew Watson's (from the now under 14's) Dad Roger.

"we had to make changes"

It was during our 3rd season the decision was made to change club colours to red & black and change the names of the small-sided teams from wild birds (Eagles, Falcons, Hawks etc) to wild cats. Craig was a big Rugby fan and requested his teams be named Tigers & Lions after the nicknames of his two favourite Rugby teams. This was followed by the Jaguars & Cheetahs and Panthers & Leopards.

THEN CAME THE BIRTH OF THE BIG KIDS TEAM

2005 saw us enter an adult team into the Sunday league, Stonydelph 'Old' Boys, this was the brain wave of Ryan Woodhall, he wanted somewhere for the 'older' lads to go after they finished playing kids football.

Where we are today

Stonydelph Boys is now one of the biggest clubs in Tamworth with over 180 members, we take kids from U5's right through to U16's plus the adult team. We cannot expand length wise anymore so started expanding width ways, with 3 x U9's and 2 x U11's last season. Next season will see another possible two extra teams playing league games with 4 x U10's & 3 x U9's teams.

Total running costs are in the region of £15-000 to £20.000 per season. (yeah unbelievable isn't it) approximately a thousand to fifteen hundred pounds per age group per season.
